Welcome to Austin!
It’s that time again, SXSW is here and people are flooding into town. Even if you’re here for SXSW film or music or interactive or wellness, if you’re a bibliophile you will want to check out Austin’s book stores. And if it’s a beautiful spring day, you might like to walk to a restaurant or coffee shop nearby to get a bite to eat. I’ve got you.
Map of Austin Book Stores and Nearby Restaurants
I made a map of all my favorite book stores. I also added in the new central Austin Public Library branch which is spectacular and a destination in itself. It’s in the middle of downtown, right next to the hike and bike trail that goes around Lady Bird Lake, and it’s gorgeous. It’s also close to Book People, a 2-story book store with books, events, toys, gifts, and coffee. If you’re looking for Austin or Texas souvenirs, head to Book People. (There is also a mini Book People located in the airport!) But Austin has a lot of book stores, so make the rounds!
In the map, the book stores and restaurants are in 2 separate layers so you can view them separately. The restaurant layer includes a few other places that are worth visiting– for example, if you’re at Austin Books and Comics and it’s a beautiful day and you want to go for a walk, head over to Sunshine Community Gardens and stroll around. They have a chicken coop, too! Barrett’s Coffee is a coffee roaster and coffee shop. The Draught House is a pub, but usually has a food truck in the parking lot.
Need more Austin attractions?
I’ve started putting all my favorite things in Austin on one page, my Austin Travel Guide. It’s a work in progress but Austin book stores and restaurants are fully linked and described. It also includes South Austin attractions, for some reason all the book stores I like are in North Austin.
I hope you enjoy your visit. Again, welcome to Austin!
