Watering with ollas

Has anyone used ollas in Austin?  I read about them at Heart of Light and they sound like they might work here, and even keep our veggies alive through summer.  The City of Austin Water Utility newsletter had an article on ollas a couple of years ago, too.  Of course, a soaker hose may be a more practical option.

    Hi Sue. I found you!

Zilkerfest is March 28 & 29, I hope to see you there.

I thought about trying Ollas, but they are kind of expensive. It would be nice to take a pottery class to make them. There’s always the option of poking tiny holes in plastic bottles or pvc, but that look so tacky.

I like the idea of watering this way but I’m afraid they are way too expensive. I wonder if a good old clay pot would do the trick. It would just need some kind of cover over the top top to stop dirt getting in and evaporation. I think I will have a go.
