Gardening

Is it Bloom Day yet?

Because for once I think my garden might have something to show for it.  More to come Sunday on that, hopefully– the Ides of March!  A preview, the four-nerve daisy in the new bed seems happy:

The last I checked my rain gauge, 2.1 inches had fallen since Wednesday. This is cause for celebration! The normal rainfall in Austin is 33″, and in 2008 we received 16.07 inches of rain. In the past 18 months, we have gotten only 23.6 inches. (From LCRA website.) We need the rain! I wish we had a rainwater collection system; I would feel much more optimistic about vegetable planting.

Yesterday’s Half Price Books score: Deborah Madison’s Local Flavors — hardcover!  Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone is definitely in the running for my favorite cookbook (the only competitor is Joy of Cooking, which is surprisingly useful for vegetarian cooking) so I am looking forward to this one.

Do you have How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bittman? It is my favorite cookbook.
